Timber Theft Legislation Update

KAPS monitored a resolution appointing a Task Force to study timber theft and trespassing. The resolution included that a member of KAPS be appointed to the task force. This is the second session this resolution has been introduced, and like last year, it did not receive consideration in the Senate.

KET Telefund a Success

Thanks in large part to the volunteers from KAPS, the KET 2013 Telefund reached their goal and raised $600,000 for KET’s programs and services! Viewers called in $14,940 during the KAPS shift on Thursday, March 14. The KAPS team raised an additional $3,125 with calls to their friends, family and associates. KAPS also gave a donation of $500 to KET.

House Bill 145

KAPS legislative priority this session was passage of HB 145 – legislation placing licensed land surveyors under a one year statute of limitations. HB 145 passed the legislature and has been sent to the Governor for his signature. We are working with Rep. Brent Yonts to request a formal bill signing ceremony with Governor Beshear.

Senate Bill 178 and House Bill 486

Also referred to as the “Montgomery Bill” by some. The bill was sponsored by Senator Vernie McGaha and Representative Terry Mills respectively. SB 178 was revised changed from a Constitutional Amendment to a regular bill revising KRS 73 to require Licensing of the County Surveyor. This bill has passed and on its way to Governor Beshear’s office to be signed. Thank you to all that helped with the passing of this bill. And it should be known that surveyors came together to make this happen. I personally know of countless meetings, calls and emails at the right time and very much needed to make this bill a reality. Thank you. Mr. Richard Montgomery, PE, PLS deserves a tremendous amount of credit for making this bill come to fruition. He spent countless hours in Frankfort moving this forward. I personally do not believe this bill would have been passed without Richard. Richard you have my sincerest appreciation and thanks for a job very well done!!!
